Property for sale in Costa Brava

The Costa Brava runs from Blanes to the French border: more than 200 kilometres of coves, headlands and small towns. We work in the middle of it, from Begur down to Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Costa Brava
Why here

What buying in Costa Brava is really like

The coast is not one market but many. Each stretch has its own landscape and its own kind of house: fishing villages in the coves around Palafrugell and Begur, year-round towns such as Palamós and Sant Feliu de Guíxols, and the resort life of Platja d'Aro, with green valleys and urbanisations behind them all.

That is why the first question we ask buyers is not about the budget but about how they will use the house. Somewhere to live all year needs a town that stays open in winter. A summer house can be in a quiet cove. A house you plan to let needs a tourist licence, and that rules out more properties than most people expect.

Our office is in Sant Antoni de Calonge, in the centre of the stretch we cover, so we see the houses ourselves and know the streets they are in. We sell, look after houses and renovate them, and our town pages describe each place in detail.

The coast

How the coast got its name

The name Costa Brava, the wild or rugged coast, was coined by the journalist Ferran Agulló and first appeared in print in 1908, in La Veu de Catalunya. At first it described only a short stretch. It was later extended all the way to the French border and became the official name in 1965.

Much of the coast can still be walked on the camí de ronda, the paths once used by fishermen, smugglers and border guards, which now form part of the long-distance GR 92. Behind the coast rise the Gavarres, whose highest point, Puig d'Arques, reaches 531 metres.

Practical

What you actually need to know

Airports
Girona airport is between about 25 and 55 km from the towns we cover. Barcelona airport is between about 110 and 140 km.
Roads
The AP-7 motorway runs inland. The C-31 along the coast and the C-65 and C-66 towards Girona connect the towns with it.
Hospital
The Hospital de Palamós serves the whole Baix Empordà, the central part of the coast.
Climate
Mediterranean: hot, dry summers and fairly cool winters, with July and August the hottest months. The north wind, the tramuntana, can blow hard.
Tourist letting
Letting a house to holidaymakers needs a tourist licence registered for the property, and most municipalities on this coast now limit new ones.
Year-round towns
Palamós, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Palafrugell and Calonge keep their full life in winter. Many coves and resorts are much quieter.

Buying in Costa Brava: the questions we get

Where on the Costa Brava should I buy?
It depends on how you will use the house. For living all year, look at the towns with a life of their own, such as Palamós, Palafrugell, Calonge or Sant Feliu. For a summer house, the coves around Begur and Llafranc or the urbanisations of the Vall d'Aro. We are happy to talk it through.
Which part of the Costa Brava do you cover?
The central stretch, from Begur and Palafrugell down to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, with the inland villages and urbanisations behind it. Our office is in Sant Antoni de Calonge, in the middle of that area.
Can I rent out a house on the Costa Brava?
Only with a tourist licence registered for the property. Most towns on this coast are in an area where new licences are restricted, so never assume a house comes with one. We check the position before you commit, and our sister company Quality Renting handles the letting itself.
What does a house on the Costa Brava cost?
It depends far more on the exact location, the view and the state of the house than on the town. Tell us your budget and what you need, and we will tell you honestly what it buys and where.
Do I need a car?
For most houses, yes. The urbanisations and coves are rarely within walking distance of shops, and buses connect the main towns but not the hills. An apartment in one of the towns is the exception.
Can you look after the house when I am not there?
Yes. We hold the keys, check the house on a rhythm agreed with you, and take care of the garden, the pool and repairs with our own team. It is the same office that sells the houses.
