Property for sale in Sant Antoni de Calonge

Sant Antoni runs along the bay between Torre Valentina in the south and the edge of Palamós in the north. About 3,400 people live here all year. In summer the population grows a great deal, but the beach is long enough that it rarely feels crowded the way some resorts do.

It suits people who want the sea within walking distance and a town that does not shut down in October. The shops, cafés and the Wednesday market stay, and the village of Calonge, with everything a local community needs, is three kilometres inland. Because we are based here, looking after a house in Sant Antoni is something we do every day.

Near the beach the market is mostly apartments, many of them with sea views. Behind the town and on the headlands are villas and townhouses in the urbanisations, some of them looking straight out over the bay.

Sant Antoni began as a row of huts on the shore where the fishermen of Calonge kept their boats and gear. Once the threat of pirates faded, families settled by the water, and the seafront quarters took shape in the late eighteenth century. Some door lintels still carry dates from that time and the century after.

People lived here long before that. On a small hill about 150 metres from the sea lies the Roman villa del Collet, occupied from the second century before Christ until late antiquity, with kilns where amphorae for wine were made. The town's present church dates from 1923, and for a few years in the 1930s Sant Antoni was even a municipality of its own.
