Property for sale in Castell d'Aro

Castell d'Aro is the old village of the municipality, built on a low hill around its castle three kilometres from the sea. Below it the valley fills with houses and gardens all the way to Platja d'Aro.

Castell d'Aro
Why here

What buying in Castell d'Aro is really like

The village of Castell d'Aro has about 2,100 inhabitants and a small, protected medieval centre. It shares a municipality with Platja d'Aro and S'Agaró, so the beach, the shops and the golf are a few minutes away, but the village itself stays quiet and residential.

It appeals to people who want the facilities of Platja d'Aro without living in a resort. Most of the houses are detached, with gardens, spread across the Vall d'Aro, which the river Ridaura runs through. We sell here regularly and look after houses in the area as part of our usual round.

The market is mostly detached houses and villas in the valley and on the slopes, plus a few village houses in the old centre, which come up rarely and often need work.

The village

A castle older than the resort

The castle that gives the village its name, Benedormiens, is first documented in 1041, when it was entrusted to the monks of Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Fires in 1462 and 1879 destroyed much of the medieval building. It has been restored and is now used for exhibitions.

Next to it stands the church of Santa Maria, consecrated in 1078, with a late Gothic nave and a plain Baroque facade. The narrow, steep streets around them keep elements from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, and since 1995 the castle, the church and the old core have been protected together as a heritage site.

Buying in Castell d'Aro: the questions we get

Why buy in Castell d'Aro rather than Platja d'Aro?
Castell d'Aro is quieter and more residential, with mostly houses and gardens rather than apartments, while the beach, the shops and the golf of Platja d'Aro are a few minutes away. Many buyers want exactly that combination.
What kind of properties come up in Castell d'Aro?
Mainly detached houses with gardens and pools in the valley and on the slopes, and occasionally a house in the old village. Plots are often larger than near the coast.
Is Castell d'Aro a good place to live all year?
Yes. It is a residential village rather than a holiday resort, and Platja d'Aro, with everything open all year, is very close.
Can I rent my house out in Castell d'Aro?
Holiday letting in Catalonia requires a tourist licence registered against the specific property. Never assume a house comes with one. We check the position before you commit, and our sister company Quality Renting handles the letting itself.
How far is Castell d'Aro from the airport?
Girona airport is about 30 km by road, roughly twenty-five minutes. Barcelona airport is about 115 km and takes around an hour and twenty minutes outside the August traffic. Most owners who come several times a year use Girona.
Can you look after a house in Castell d'Aro?
Yes. We hold the keys, check the house on a rhythm agreed with you, and take care of the pool, the garden and repairs with our own team.
