Platja d'Aro is the liveliest town on this part of the coast: about two kilometres of beach, a long shopping street, a marina and two golf courses. In the hills behind it the urbanisations are much quieter.

What buying in Platja d'Aro is really like
About 9,000 people live in Platja d'Aro, and in summer the municipality can pass 100,000. That contrast shapes it. From June to September it is busy, with shops, restaurants and nightlife that draw people from all along the Costa Brava. The rest of the year it is a normal town with everything open.
Most buyers here choose between two very different things: an apartment close to the beach and the shops, or a house up in the pine-covered hills, a few minutes' drive from the noise. Both work well, but for different people. We cover the whole area, including looking after the house once it is yours.
The market is wide: apartments in the centre and along the seafront, townhouses, and detached villas on the slopes of Politur, Els Pinars and the golf at Mas Nou, some of them with long views over the bay.

The town
A hamlet that became a resort
At the beginning of the twentieth century there was hardly anything here: Fenals d'Aro was a hamlet of a little over a hundred people, inland from an empty beach. The tourism boom of the 1960s changed that very quickly. The town hall moved down to the coast and in 1962 the place took the name Platja d'Aro.
Older traces remain. The Roman villa of Pla de Palol, near Cala Rovira, has been excavated and can be visited. At one end of the main beach stands the Cavall Bernat rock, the town's symbol, and at the other the river Ridaura reaches the sea. The Carnival, revived in 1978, is known for its costumes and its big parade.

Els Pinars
A district of houses on the pine-covered slopes above the town, quieter than the centre and still close to it.
Politur
A residential urbanisation near the coves of Cala Rovira and Cala del Pi, with houses among the pines and the coastal path nearby.
Mas Nou
Around the Golf d'Aro course, high in the Gavarres at about 300 metres. The most open views in the area and the most exposed to the wind.
Treumal
The coastal area on the border with Sant Antoni de Calonge, with small coves and pine woods that come down to the sea.

What you actually need to know
- Girona airport
- About 33 km by road, roughly half an hour. The most useful airport for anyone coming regularly.
- Barcelona airport
- About 118 km, around an hour and twenty-five minutes on the AP-7 outside August.
- Roads
- The C-31 runs along the coast, and the C-65 goes inland to Girona and the AP-7 motorway.
- Golf
- Two courses within the municipality, including Golf d'Aro at Mas Nou, and more within a short drive.
- August
- The town is at its busiest. Traffic and parking near the beach are the real constraint, which is one reason many owners prefer a house in the hills.
- Out of season
- Shops and restaurants in the centre stay open all year, so the town works well for people who come in spring and autumn.
