Santa Cristina d'Aro
Why here

What buying in Santa Cristina d'Aro is really like

The municipality covers almost all of the upper Vall d'Aro, between the Gavarres to the north and the Cadiretes hills to the south, and it reaches the sea at a handful of small coves. About 6,000 people live here, spread between the village and a long list of residential urbanisations.

Buyers come here for space and quiet: larger plots, houses among cork oaks and pines, and the golf, while the beaches and shops of Platja d'Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols are close by. We sell in the valley regularly and look after houses here, where gardens and pools are often the main job.

The market is mostly detached villas in the urbanisations, many around the golf course and on the slopes of the valley, plus some old farmhouses that suit buyers looking for a renovation project.

The valley

The old heart of the Vall d'Aro

Santa Cristina was the main parish of the whole Vall d'Aro in the Middle Ages, and in 1041 an agreement over the custody of the castle of Aro was signed in its church. The present municipality was formed in 1858, when Santa Cristina, Bell-lloc, Solius and Romanyà separated from Castell d'Aro.

From 1892 until the end of the 1960s, a narrow-gauge railway from Sant Feliu to Girona ran through the valley and stopped in the village. Its route is now a greenway, and the old station is the tourist office. Since the 1980s the population has grown strongly, mostly through people choosing to live in the valley's residential areas.

Where exactly

Areas in and around Santa Cristina d'Aro

The valley is large, and its areas range from historic hamlets to golf-course urbanisations.

  • Bell-lloc

A small hamlet with a pre-Romanesque church built on the site of a Roman villa, and the Bell-lloc urbanisations around it.

  • Golf Costa Brava

The urbanisation around the Club de Golf Costa Brava, founded in 1968 by the club's own account, with two courses and 27 holes. Villas with gardens near the fairways.

  • Solius

A hamlet in the hills where Cistercian monks from Poblet settled in 1967. The monastery church is the old parish church of Santa Agnès.

  • Vall Repòs

One of the residential urbanisations of the municipality, in the wooded part of the valley.

Buying in Santa Cristina d'Aro: the questions we get

Why buy in Santa Cristina d'Aro?
For space, green surroundings and quiet, with the beaches of Platja d'Aro and Sant Feliu close by and Girona airport less than half an hour away. Plots are generally larger than on the coast itself.
What kind of properties come up in Santa Cristina d'Aro?
Mainly detached villas in the urbanisations, many with large gardens and pools, homes around the golf course, and occasionally an old farmhouse.
Is Santa Cristina d'Aro a good place to live all year?
Yes. Many people live here permanently. The village has its services, and Platja d'Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols are close for everything else.
Can I rent my house out in Santa Cristina d'Aro?
Holiday letting in Catalonia requires a tourist licence registered against the specific property. Never assume a house comes with one. We check the position before you commit, and our sister company Quality Renting handles the letting itself.
How far is Santa Cristina d'Aro from the airport?
Girona airport is about 26 km by road, roughly twenty-five minutes. Barcelona airport is about 112 km and takes around an hour and twenty minutes outside the August traffic.
Can you look after a house with a large garden?
Yes. We hold the keys, check the house on a rhythm agreed with you, and take care of the garden, the pool and repairs with our own team.
