Cork oak forests

The entire package of 3 forests is sold in the municipality of Calonge (Les Gavarres), for forestry. In the past, in this leafy area of Les Gavarres (a mountain massif that connects the Costa Brava with the city of Girona), cork was obtained from the countless holm oaks that populate the forests of these parts.

Even today, anyone who walks along the paths marked by those men helped by mules, who carried the heavy bales of cork, can observe the cork oaks without the lower part of their bark, which has been 'peeled' by the few cork collectors that remain in the area.
